Calgary is committed to the deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to provide improvements throughout the transportation system as the City continues to grow. ITS can be delivered as a collection of individual applications but this is likely to increase costs, duplicate data collection and use, and cause problems in the future for integration and sharing of information. ITS are successful if delivered through a "Systems Engineering" approach. An ITS Architecture is a tool that describes how each ITS application can function together to meet the needs of the region.; It is important to recognize that the development of an intelligent transportation system is most efficient and provides the greatest benefit through a regional approach that is based in delivering services that meet the needs of the system users. To support this, an investigation of developing regional ITS Architectures for medium sized cities using national architecture guidelines has been undertaken.
