Abstract/Summary:
This study examines 2 classes of high school Beginning Drawing and Painting students. The experimental group received lessons on postmodern reconstructive empathic art intended to raise levels of student empathy as measured through a test instrument and pretest and posttest empathic drawings. The control group's traditional lessons focused on artists of the past.;No correlation was found between the treatment and posttest empathy levels, although analysis found the questionnaire to be very reliable. Empathy drawings by 3 out of 4 of the case studies showed increased empathy levels following the treatment, yet the sample was too small for statistical analysis.;Twenty-seven control group students and 23 experimental group students completed a questionnaire measuring both cognitive and affective levels of empathy. In addition, case studies of four experimental group students were conducted. Detailed profiles of each case study and analysis of their drawings were make by an independent panel of judges.
