Abstract/Summary:
This is an inquiry into the reliability of analysis when applied to what most matters to humans, which is experiences such as those related to love, suffering, insight, beauty, compassion, justice (or fairness), death, right action, and the numinous. This implies looking into the limitations of analysis, so it questions the very essence of philosophy as a discipline—such as it has largely been understood, and practiced. Analysis is appropriate for mechanical, material, or physical inquiries—making it idoneous for scientific inquiry and research, and for practical matters; but from the ancient to the contemporary, wisdom lovers have shown that human transformation, not analysis, is the living prerequisite for wisdom-loving (philosophical) research. Life lived in terms of sensitivity rather than analysis, with its conditioning and presuppositions, is such a transformation into a wisdom-loving lifestyle.
