Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study is to understand the contribution of childhood and school experiences to current achievements in work and family life. Specifically the study examined participants' perceptions of the contribution of education to present and future career and familial goals which the study defines as, the "good life." In this research, the term "good life" is encompassed by various ways, both historical and contemporary, by which Portuguese men understand their journey from childhood to present-day locations of familial, social and economic success.;A number of qualitative research approaches were adopted in this study, including "individual and group conversations" as the central method of gathering data. Participants involved in the research were five male (including the researcher) members of Toronto's Portuguese community who attended school in Toronto as children and adolescents. A unique feature of this study is the dual position of the researcher as both researcher and an active contributing participant in the conversation process. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
