Abstract/Summary:
The present study attempts to analyze how political and economic reforms initiated by the government have changed the Chinese film industry and what impact imported Hollywood movies have upon the Chinese film industry in the 1990s.; With direct government involvement, the Chinese film industry was actively imitating the Hollywood system. Along with vertical integration and incorporation between film and television interests, the entire industry was undergoing full-scale commercialization State subsidies contributed to the revitalization of the Chinese cinema, and protective state policies effectively curtailed Hollywood influence in the Chinese film market. While the insistence of the strict ideological control imposed by the Chinese government kept many Hollywood movies outside, it constrained the development of the Chinese film industry as well.
