Abstract/Summary:
The following creative project, titled "Women in Independent and Underground Rock: A Teaching Exercise on the Subculture of Musical Feminism," represents the description of a lecture prepared by the author, Gregory Carlson, for use in an introductory Women's Studies course at the undergraduate level. As partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts in Humanities degree, the project was undertaken to examine and explore gender issues within the realm of specific genres of contemporary recorded popular music in America and Great Britain. Special attention was given to the "Riot Grrrl" subculture, but the work of other small, medium, and large label artists who demonstrated marked independence in their approach to the music industry was additionally studied. The project represents a curricular framework for use as a class period topic designed to engage students and generate discussion between teacher and class regarding the work of the artists included.
