Abstract/Summary:
In my thesis I will examine how physical and mental illness can lead to a subject's consideration of suicide as a means of resolving a subject's 'dis-ease' with the self. I will then examine how suicide of the subject can compound the problematics of life writing genres.;My thesis consists of three parts: a memoir I have written on the topic of my mother's suicide that is based on actual events but presented as a fiction, an introduction to this memoir that takes up problems of genre, and an analysis of the memoir.;The analysis is divided into four topics of discussion. These are: "Illness as a Dangerous Opportunity," "Uncloseting Illness," "Taking Comfort with Job," and "Taking Control of the Text of Your Life."...
