Suicidal Ideation And Its Influencing Factors

In recent years, the cases of students' suicide in Universities are occurring continuously. Since 2000, university students in Beijing committed suicide at the average number of deaths more than double-digit every year (19 students in 2005, 15 students in 2006). In the first half of 2007, the number of university students committed suicide has already achieved the sum of in 2006. In May, 2007, several students in such university as the People's University of China, Beijing Normal University, and Beijing Institute of Technology committed suicide, which surprised many people. With the rapid pace of human lives and in such increasingly competitive society, especially for the university students who are in this condition, the reasons for suicide are more and more complicated. Suicidal ideation is the strong factor of suicide and it is also the early warning signals for suicide among students. In order to take efficient measures, this study is intended to investigate the current situation and analyze the influential factor of the suicidal ideation, and suggest some measures to avoid suicide.In this study, qualitative-based research method is used as the primary method, while quantitative functioned complementarily. Undergraduates suicide ideation questionnaire and suicide Attitude questionnaire of xiao-shuiyuan(QSA) and semi-structured interview outline were used. Taking the Non-random sampling of judgment and quota, 500 undergraduates from the People's University of China and the Minzu University of China were taken conducted a questionnaire survey, and an in-depth interview among them were taken.The main results and Conclusions in this study are as follows:First, 26.4% of students have suicidal ideation, among whom who often has suicidal ideation accounted for 0.8%, 11.3% has several times, 14.3% has one time. Suicide ideation has no significant difference in terms of school, gender, grade, ethnic, major, belief and so on.Second, the incidence of undergraduates' suicide (suicide attempt) was 5.3%, stronger suicide ideation were more prone to suicidal behavior. Undergraduates have suicide ideation, the incidence of suicidal behaviorwas 9.8%, and the recurrence rate (Student who takes a negative attitude towards suicide in future) was 7.1%, which is higher than those without suicidal ideation students whose incidence of suicidal behavior 1.3%, the recurrence rate of 4.4%.Third, suicide attitudes are neutral and negative attitude on the whole in this study. The students who holds positive attitude for suicide are more prone to have suicide ideationFourth, undergraduate who has the stress, interpersonal discord are likely to commit suicide ideation. Stress manifested in the study, employment, economic mainly, the gap between ideal and reality is big. Interpersonal relations discord are the feelings of love, teacher-student relationship discord, parent-child tensions and incomplete and so on.Fifth, suicide ideation has something to do with the sense of "meaninglessness" in the study and life. Investigation showed that rate of suicide ideation among those who has the sense of "meaninglessness" was 5.1%, and the rate of suicidal behavior is 10%, which is higher than that of those with the sense of dumps, anxiety, fragrant and hostility. Therefore, it is important to prevent the sense of "meaninglessness" from prevailing on the campus.Sixth, multiple regression analysis showed that suicide ideation was affected by many factors directly or indirectly , such as suicide attempts, suicide attitude, meaninglessness, sex, stress and the result of the interaction of various factors. Undergraduates, families, schools, societyand the country must cooperate to reduce suicide, reflect and explore the personnel training mode, so as to adapt to the increasing competition and to forge the person physically and mentally health .
