Personality Traits And The Relationship With Suicide Ideation Of Suicide Survivors In Rural China

Objective: To explore the personality traits of suicide survivors in rural China,contrast differences among suicide survivors,disease survivors and accident survivors,and to analyze the mediating effects of depression in personality traits and suicide ideation.And provide a scientific evidence of suicidal research and prevention strategies for the rural C hina suicide survivors.Method: Randomly selecting eight villages from the town of Dalian city as sample site.Collecting all of suicide,accident and disease deceased in 5 years and choosing 1-3 relatives(parents,spouses,children,siblings)of the deceased as research object.Using Five Factor Inventory(N EO-FFI),Hamilton Depression Scale(HAMD),Beck scale for suicide ideation-Chinese version(BSI-CV),Chinese version of the Structured C linical Interview for DSM-IV(SCID)and Social Demography Q uestionnaire as research tools for all the 465 bereaved,including 254 suicide survivors of 202 completed suicides,100 accident survivors of 75 accident deaths and 111 disease survivors of 81 natural disease deaths,to do the one-to-one on-scene psychological interview and questionnaire,average review time is 1.5h.Result:(1)The group of suicide survivors has significant higher scores of neuroticism than group of disease survivors(p<0.01);the group of disease survivors has significant higher scores of openness than suicide survivors(p<0.01).(2)The female suicide survivors score higher than men a t the scale of neuroticism and agreeableness(p<0.000);In physical health,the extroversion scores of very good health suicide survivors are significant higher than others,and the agreeableness scores are significant higher than the group of good,average and bad(p<0.01);In economic state,the neuroticism scores of good and average economic state suicide survivors are significant lower than bad and worse ones(p<0.01);the suicide survivors with belief have significant higher scores of openness than suicide survivors without belief(p<0.01).(3)The correlation analysis of total scores of HAMD and its relative factors is follow,the total score of HAMD has a significant positive correlation with neuroticism(r=0.381,p=0.000),agreeableness(r=0.134,p=0.003),total score of BSI(r=0.444,p=0.000)and mental disease(r=0.342,p=0.000),and negative correlation with extroversion(r=-0.305,p=0.003),openness(r=-0.315,p=0.045),category of relatives(r=-0.328?p=0.000),years of education(r=-0.165,p=0.007),health condition(r=-0.327,p=0.000),economic state(r=-0.243,p=0.000).The correlation analysis of total scores of HAMD and its relative factors is follow: the total score of BSI has a significant positive correlation with total score of HAMD(r=0.444,p=0.000),neuroticism(r=0.334,p=0.000)and mental disease(r=0.410,p=0.000),and negative correlation with extroversion(r=-0.183,p=0.003),openness(r=-0.126,p=0.045),years of education(r=-0.125,p=0.007),economic state(r=-0.247,p=0.000),health condition(r=-0.228,p=0.000)and category of relatives(r=0.253,p=0.000).(4)Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that: the main influencing factors of depression according to the regression coefficients in order are total score of BSI,openness,extroversion,health condition,mental disease,category of relatives,agreeableness and neuroticism;and the main influencing factors of suicide ideation according to the regression coefficients in order are total scores of HAMD,mental disease,neuroticism and health condition.The linear regression model was significant(FB=24.324,FH=22.649,p<0.000).(5)The effect of neuroticism on suicide ideation is partially mediated by depression;the effect of openness on suicide ideation is completely mediated by depression;and the effect of extroversion on suicide ideation is completely mediated by depression.Conclusion:(1)suicide survivors have higher neuroticism than disease survivors,and lower openness than disease survivors.The personality traits of suicide survivors have significant difference in gender,health condition,economic state and religions.Female suicide survivors have higher neuroticism and agreeableness than other survivors. Suicide survivors with good health condition have higher extroversion and agreeableness than other survivors.Suicide survivors with low economic state have higher neuroticism than other survivors.Suicide survivors with belief have higher extroversion than other survivors.(2)The personality effects on depression severity of suicide survivors are neuroticism,extroversion,openness,agreeableness;the personality effect s on suicide ideation severity of suicide survivors are neuroticism.The effect of neuroticism on suicide ideation is partially mediated by depression;the effect of openness on suicide ideation is completely mediated by depression;and the effect of extro version on suicide ideation is completely mediated by depression.
