This study aims at understanding the opportunities that today's ever-changing communication environment presents for raising awareness and inspiring action against the worldwide refugee problem. It focuses on the use of old and new media by transnational non-governmental organizations (NGOs), who work alongside national governments and inter-governmental organizations, to put an end to the suffering of millions of refugees. It explores traditional media's approach to refugee issues in the age of satellite TV and the internet. It also looks into how refugee NGOs are responding to the demands of these new media technologies to get their message across in a more effective manner. Throughout this study, my endeavor is to identify in what ways the communication technology and media transformation of our time are affecting the refugee NGOs' ability to garner and sustain attention to the refugee problem.
