| The problem. The purpose of this study was to examine the circumstances surrounding the evolution of coordinated European defence, to take into account the current trends shaping that evolution within the context of the European Union, and then to proffer the future course of European security integration.; Method. A literature review was conducted surveying works that have dealt with the particulars of modern European defence and security.; Results. The Europeans should continue to develop the Western European Union as the European pillar of NATO, and in time, the WEU will be absorbed into the Union to provide for the defence and security of the European Union in the 21st century. |
