Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to provide information to West Virginia University and State Department of Education personnel that may be useful in developing a program whose purpose would be to educate educators on the effects of burnout.Data were collected via 92 questionnaires mailed to current agricultural teachers in West Virginia. Of these, 63 usable questionnaires were returned. The return rate was 68%.The survey consisted of three parts: (a) General Demographics, (b) Personal Self-Evaluation and (c) Maslach Educators Survey.Forty-six percent of the respondents are between the ages of 41 and 50. Over 92% were male, while 8% percent were female. The same numbers are true for that of married or single responders.More than 63% of the respondents have taught for more than fifteen years. Sixty-five percent of the respondents are employed on a 240-day contract. Eighty-four percent of the agriculture teachers indicated that they do attend classes or workshops.Fifty-eight percent of the respondents do not take a yearly vacation and 52% work in a multi-teacher department. Two-thirds of the respondents have other employment in addition to teaching. In the Professional Self-Evaluation category, a significant correlation occurred between "I would consider my classroom and laboratory teaching to be" with both emotional exhaustion and depersonalization subscales. "Support I receive from my administration" also showed a significant correlation. "Interaction with other teachers in my school" showed a significant correlation with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. The scores for the Maslach Educators Survey indicated the highest scores in Personal Accomplishment followed by Emotional Exhaustion, and Depersonalization had the lowest score.
