Abstract/Summary:
Copyright infringement is a problem in schools because many educators are not aware of what constitutes fair use. This study attempted to answer whether educators are aware of and comply with fair use guidelines and who should provide in-service training on fair use.; Questionnaires were sent to elementary school principals, teachers, and librarians in Missouri. The respondents were to determine if different situations were within fair use guidelines, how often the situations were practiced, and who should provide in-service about copyright.; Those most knowledgeable were school librarians and principals. A majority of teachers were knowledgeable but had higher percentages of "unsure" answers. Principals felt that most educators were complying with fair use; however, teachers thought that many uses of copyrighted materials were outside the limits of fair use. School librarians were perceived as the most appropriate to provide training on fair use of copyrighted materials in an educational setting.
