Improvisation is a spontaneous moment of inspiration within dancers' mind or body. It seems like do not need any preparation, however, research has proved that dancer's ability in improvising can be improved through encouragement and training. This research aimed to investigate the differences and similarities of dance improvisation between the Western and Eastern world. The dance improvisation in two specific countries --- America and China have been compared to emphasize the practical use of improvisation in dance. The result shows that based on the different social ideology and educational models, China and the U.S. still hold different attitudes towards improvisation, particularly for the application of improvisation in educational activities, performance, and self-expression. In the future, China should gradually integrate improvisational processes into educational activities. |
