Abstract/Summary:
Achievement in a first year high school chemistry class can be related to achievement in mathematics. The purpose of this study was to correlate the achievement of chemistry with the achievement in mathematics on a random sample group of sophomore students in a large high school.;The results of this research showed a positive correlation between achievement in mathematics and achievement in chemistry. The best predictor for achievement in chemistry will be the algebra I grade, geometry grade and GPA. If these scores were high for a student then there is a high probability that the student would have success in chemistry.;The design of this study involved two groups of high school chemistry sophomores. Data were collected on algebra I, geometry and algebra II grades, eighth grade scores on the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills in mathematics and science, grade point average, the scores on the American Chemical Society's exam for first year high school chemistry students and final chemistry grades.
