Abstract/Summary:
Programing Preschool Education for the Severely Retarded child is concerned with the need for and the educational advantages of providing a pre-kindergarten type of schooling for trainable mentally retarded children.;Moustakas and Berson in their book The Nursery School and Child Care Center have listed according to a 1951 census seventy-two nursery schools for exceptional children operating in the United States. Nursery schools for these children serve a dual purpose, that of giving necessary free time to the parents as well as permitting the child, by means of valuable association with others, to broaden his background. Thus his entry into public school special classes may become a more pleasant experience.;Two illustrative daily programs are included in this paper. One for a half day session and the other for a full school day. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).;For the trainable almost no special schools exist during the nursery years. Not until these children reach school age do the problems associated with their special characteristics become of sufficient importance to call for public provision of special education programs.
