Using Joseph Campbell's seventeen-step monomyth cycle as format, the seventh stage of Erik Erikson's psychosocial development (generativity vs. stagnation) will be explored in a middle aged male hero living in a thriller/horror novel set in the 1880s. The middle aged hero faces a different quest than does his younger counterpart. Wisdom gained replaces lost physical prowess. Youth is replaced by acceptance of the aging process. At the end of his quest, the middle aged hero returns to the world looking forward to the rest of his life, and the things that he has created, rather than living with regret and stagnation.
