Abstract/Summary:
The phenomenal evolution and pervasive nature of microelectronics technology has made it a force on par with the industrial revolution in transforming the nature of economic development and thereby the basis of international competition amongst nations.;The purpose of this undertaking is to explore the hypothesis that technological nationalism, as practiced by Brazil, is not compatible with the development of a global high technology industry. Doing so requires a global outlook, as practiced by Korea, which views technological interdependence as key to the development of a globally competitive high technology industry.;In the ensuing pages the experience of two newly industrializing countries, namely South Korea and Brazil, in microelectronics will be examined within a comparative framework. The reference point for and the measure of the study will be the nature of international competition as determined by the essence and pace of global technological change characterizing the industry.
