In the context of shrinking city around the world,vacancy and abandonment bring aesthetic and environmental confusion to cities and communities,while also destroying property values and weakening the attractiveness and cohesion of cities and communities.Under the circumstances where city policy makers or planners are forced to "countering shrinkage" or "inaction",the form dilemma of some shrinking cities becomes more and more prominent,which in turn leads to further shrinkage of the population,and these cities begin to enter the "vortex" of the cycle of landscape decline and population loss.Smart shrinkage,as a management strategy to reshape urban spatial form and improve the quality of life,is effective in solving the problem of urban landscape decline by using the existing relevant technologies and tools.However,it is also common for specific practices to be separated from planning objectives,and for macro guidance to be contrary to local control.The construction of differentiated form control methods is even more difficult.Therefore,this paper introduces the new tool of transect model,and tries to explore a new method of smart shrinkage which can not only coordinate the system,but also implement the policy of division,so as to effectively control and manage the physical spatial form of different urban locations and help solve the form dilemma of shrinking city.Based on this,this paper firstly summarizes the research status of smart shrinkage and transect model at home and abroad,analyzes the conceptual connotation and characteristics of them,and establishes the coupling framework of them from the aspects of core value,control object and operation mode.In the process of "spatial resource optimization and reorganization" and "integration and withdrawal of inefficient resources",the transect model can be used to control and adjust the "rational allocation of spatial elements" and "smooth transition of ecological zones".The coupling framework establishes the correspondence between the smart shrinkage targets and the form control methods,which provides the corresponding theoretical support for the follow-up research.Secondly,through case study,this paper analyzes and discusses the experience of form control based on transect model in relevant contraction areas in the United States,so as to prove the feasibility of applying transect model to smart shrinkage.On the basis of theoretical research and case analysis,this paper attempts to construct the technical path of smart shrinkage andsmart growth form control based on the transect model,and gives a specific description of smart shrinkage differentiation form control method.When a certain shrinking area appears a form of decline,the specific control strategy should be determined according to the zones location of the area.In addition,this article also takes the resource-exhausted city—Lengshuijiang,Hunan Province as an example.It follows the requirements of the form control basis,the control mode and the control process,and conducts the path simulation and application of this technical path on the basis of fully understanding its contraction details and the form dilemmas.The transect model provides a new way of thinking and method for the city and community to manage the decline of physical space,so that the declining areas can maintain the integrity,diversity and continuity of urban and rural sections through architectural transformation,urban design and landscape design.This study hopes to use systematic and differentiated control means to help reshape the quality of urban public space through the construction and application of the Technical path of form control,so as to make up for the deficiency of existing smart shrinking tools and provide a feasible reference for other shrinking cities or regions in China to solve such problems.
