The Research On Material Expression Of Contemporary Regional Architecture In Bangkok

Bangkok’s obvious location,good geography and abundant resources make it a "hotbed" for the growth and evolution of regional architecture,not only in terms of social and economic development compared to other parts of Southeast Asia,but also in terms of cultural heritage.In recent years,Bangkok has been catching up with other Asian cities in the field of architectural design,and Thai architects have been practising more contemporary regional architecture,which presents a distinctive regional character,many of these buildings have won international awards and recognition in the international architectural field,contemporary regional architecture is taking root and flourishing in this privileged land.The author’s study of regional architecture from the perspective of material expression is certainly a worthwhile subject for the cosmopolitan city of Bangkok,where the international and the regional are fused.This thesis takes contemporary regional architecture and the materials used in Bangkok as the research vehicle,and aims to explore the strategies of material expression as follows: firstly,the regional architecture and the materials used in Bangkok are studied,and the ontological nature,characteristics and application methods of each material are analysed to establish the basis for the study of material expression;secondly,the relevant case studies are analysed and studied,and how the regional expression of building materials is carried out from three levels:symbiotic expression,ecological response and cultural continuity.The results of the study show that the application of traditional and modern materials is constantly intertwined,and that the process of regional expression of materials should focus on the combination of period and locality,applying "intergration","contrast","appropriateness construction","integration with the environment","replacement" and "reconstruction" are the six design expressions in order to accomplish the practical and research proposition of territorial expression in a more appropriate way.This article explores the fit between regional architecture and material expression at both the expressive and constructive levels,adding to the research on material expression and regional architecture,and filling in the gaps for domestic research on Southeast Asian architecture.
