“Trees shaped into wild goose wings shadow the tiger-skin-patterned walls.Equisitely carved beams and railings ornament the tortuous corridors.” The tiger-skin-patterned wall here is a common garden wall in Qing Dynasty royal gardens.The tiger skin pattern is formed by yellow irregular polygonal stones collocating with mortar joints,which is a typical practice to pursue “agritainment”.Based on the investigation and related documents,such as painting,engineering archives,etc.,this thesis summarizes five common types of royal garden walls in Qing Dynasty,including tiger-skin-patterned wall,and the matching mode of wall types with architectural space.By using the methods of literature research,artisan interview,field research,etc.,this thesis traces the origin of tiger-skin-patterned wall,restores its practice and cost,and summarizes its advantages and common application forms.Combined with material testing and stability analysis,the research is conducted on material properties and stability under different working conditions,drawing the conclusion that the material performance is well and the structure is stable.Finally,bottomed on the investigation and research,the thesis combs the common diseases and its mechanism of tiger-skin-patterned walls,and put forward the protection strategies about masonry,environment,maintenance,evaluation,and so on.
