Blending The Old With The New-A Brief History Of Suzhou Classical Gardens In The 1980s

After experiencing the turmoil of "Cultural Revolution",many classical gardens in the south of China have been left in ruins.Since the 1980s(1980-1989),the state has gradually established cultural relics administrative organs from the central to local levels and a national system of cultural relics protection.At the same time,the Classical Gardens n the Jiangnan region represented by Suzhou have undergone extensive restoration and reconstruction.And it also made initial attempts to go abroad and settle down overseas.After restoration,some gardens have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.All of these have left a lot of valuable experience for the future generations of classical garden protection and even cultural heritage protection.In addition,under the special cultural background in the 1980 s,the inheritance of classical gardens was carried out by local "translation" of foreign thoughts on the one hand,and modern "translation" of local traditional garden theory on the other hand.The publication and publication of various articles and books related to gardens also made the academic field show the characteristics of pluralism.The academic circle also changed from simply continuing the traditional garden building techniques to adding new ideas of human settlement environment construction,making this period known as an important period connecting the preceding and the following in the history of Chinese classical gardens.This paper will focus on this special historical development period of gardens,and carry out a comprehensive review and summary of the history of classical gardens in Suzhou during these ten years.This article will be based on the real archives and historical materials of Suzhou classical garden construction in the 1980 s,combined with interviews and oral statements of relevant people,narrating and studying the overall system of development and change,reflecting on its development process,and exploring the law and ideological trend of classical garden construction in this period.In addition to the comprehensive narration,it will also focus on some concrete examples of garden construction,in an attempt to clarify the historical appearance of Suzhou garden construction in the 1980s.
