Performance – including economy, functionality, structural performance, sustainability, etc.– has been accepted as one of the top value in architectural design. With the development of computational technology, design tools such as representation, generation, simulation, optimization using computers have become the most promising design technology in performance-oriented design.Still, there is a lot more to be studied in the field of computeraided design optimization in the early design stage, especially when it comes to space allocation problem, which with its complicity of form-function relationship, has yet been fully addressed in design practice considering sustainability and other performance coherently despite the tons of efforts devoted to developing usable design models. This dissertation proposes a framework on the parametric design and optimal design of space layout considering both functionality and sustainability.By dealing with function and form separately, the proposed framework tries to overcome the limitation of existing models with more comprehensive optimization on functionality, sustainability, aesthetic and structural requirement through man-machine cooperation. The implementation of the framework on a real-sited project is recorded afterward. This dissertation begins with a brief introduction of the background, the objective and value of the study, the main content and research methodology, the core terminologies used in the study, and the framework of the dissertation, followed by a review of the current research on computer-aided architectural design optimization, especially on the research of early design stage, within which the main reaserch problem, namely the space layout problem,is coherently reviewed from the aspects of general methodologies, modelling technologies and optimization methods. From this review a design framework is developed to address the problem of optimal layout design in practice. The implementation of this framework on a real-sited project of a primary school throughout the design process from site analysis to the end of layout design is recorded in the last part of this dissertation, where specific algorithms were developed to address the problems encountered in the process. The design framework proposed in this dissertation is a possible answer to the design optimization of space layout in design practice.Implemented with network-based modelling,multi-stage optimization, genetic algorithm,man-machine cooperation, this framework proposes specific strategy and solution to all main aspects on the space allocation problem.
