In recent years, with the development of China’s technology industries, transformation of traditional industries to new industries has prompted China’s economy to present a relatively obvious situation of structural optimization and adjustment. As an important industry of China’s national economy, the status of freight transportation industry in transportation system is constantly increasing. In order to ensure the deepening of supply-side structural reform,it is very important to effectively promote the transformation and upgrading of the road freight industry and realize the sustainable stability and development of the road freight industry. In order to explore the actual operation and development of the road freight market, this paper first conducts a systematic study on the relationship between road freight transport and regional economy of 31 provincial administrative units(excluding Taiwan,Hong Kong and Macao)from the perspective of coupling from 2017 to 2019.In order to further explore the relationship between the mechanism of evolution, this paper summarizes the main factors influencing the relationship between the two, active use of road freight transport activities, regional economic development, advanced nine cities as data for spatial correlation,space-time geographically weighted regression model of quantitative research,to explore the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of impact of different factors for road freight,to reveal the driving mechanism of highway freight industry development provide the reality basis for the steady development of road freight transport industry. Results show that:(1)From 2017 to 2019,under the influence of industrial structure reform, revolution rail and revolution water, the growth rate of national road freight turnover decreases and becomes negative until 2019.However,the distribution characteristics and spatial structure of the overall transport capacity remain unchanged.(2)National road freight transport activities show significant spatial agglomeration characteristics, mainly active in the Bohai Rim,Pearl River Delta,Yangtze River Delta economic agglomeration in North China,East China,Central China and South China, forming an obvious scale of centralized transport.(3)From2017 to 2019,comprehensive development level of road freight transportation in all provinces and the comprehensive development level of regional economy are relatively good on the whole, and the specific values are 0.30-0.60 and 0.40-0.80 respectively. But the regional difference is more obvious, the western and other less developed areas are generally low.(4)The results of the coupling coordination degree model show that from 2017 to 2019,the highway freight industry and regional economy of most provinces in China are in the primary coordinated development stage,Hainan and Tibet Autonomous Region are in the barely coordinated development stage, and Shaanxi,Ningxia and Heilongjiang are in the intermediate coordinated development stage.(5)From 2017 to 2019,the road freight turnover of Ningbo,Shaoxing,Hangzhou,Jiaxing,Suzhou,Wuxi,Changzhou,Zhenjiang and Nanjing have a significant positive correlation in the global scope.(6)Results of GTWR model show that residents’ consumption level, industrial production efficiency, basic resources and environment allocation, import and export trade are the key factors affecting the relationship between freight transport and economy in each region.According to the analysis, residents’ consumption level, real estate development level and industrial production efficiency have a significant positive effect on road freight transport from 2017 to 2019,while import and export trade has a negative effect on road freight transport from January to March in 2017,and then has a positive effect.
