The Evolution Of Campus Spatial Form In Huazhong University Of Science And Technology

As the first batch of university which established after the founding of New China,Huazhong University of Science and Technology has either underwent two overhauls--institutional adjustment at the beginning of the 1950 s and the expansion of university at the end of last century or witnessed two great developments of higher education in New China.This thesis duplicates the nearly seventy’s evolution of campus spatial form from 1953 up to now.If we consider campus spatial form from its appearance,it belongs to the category which studies physical space.However,if we look it from the development of the university,it is the reflection of a university’s spirit and intrinsic value.The evolution of the campus spatial fom is a historical process,which we can not tell the core value of it either getting rid of the concrete social background or using the metaphysical point of view for the process received exterior factors--the social state and inherent factors--the system,culture of a university.This thesis endeavors to summarize the evolution of Huazhong University of Science and Technology’s campus spatial form and explore potential motives from its background,system,spatial formand features putting the campus spatial form in a macro historical background.This thesis consists of three parts.The first part is the research basis which includes the first and second chapter.The first chapter covers the background,significance of the topics,the scale,content,method and the frame of the dissertation while analyzes study trends both at home and abroad.The second chapter that establishes the framework of morphological analysis states the definition of university and campus clearly,introduces theoretical study of morphological correlation and elaborates the elements of making up a campus space form.The second part is the major part of this paper including the third,fourth,fifth chapter.These chapters which make horizontal comparison of university system and concrete campus spatial form relating to the different historical periods of the university--which underwent Huazhong College of Technology,Central China University of Science and Engineering,Huazhong University of Science and Technology in order to generalize the main morphological features of each period.The third part is the result of this research,namely,the sixth chapter based on the third to fifth chapter,utilizing longitudinal time context which not only expounds the evolution track and influencing factors of the campus space form of Huazhong University of Science and Technology thoroughly but also analyses the features of evolution of its spatial pattern,function and architectural styles.In the end,the author envisioned the prospective campus spatial form of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.A summary of the evolution of campus spatial form in Huazhong University of Science and Technology helps to understand the rule concerning the campus space development and constructing future campus,what is more,helps to reveal the overall features of the evolution of campus spatial form during modernization of higher education in China.
