The discussion of man-earth relationship is a philosophical issue that has been unavoidable since the emergence and development of human society. As the 18th and 19th National Congress gradually integrated the concept of ecological civilization into all aspects of nation-building and people’s lives, the exploration of how man and nature coexist in harmony has become increasingly popular.Southern Jiangsu is located in the hinterland of the Yangtze River Delta, with favorable development conditions. The small towns in this area also show the regional influence and have great effect. However,in the process of development, the relationship between man and earth is also destroyed, such as the ecological space is squeezed and the ecological system is seriously interfered by man.Under the concept of coordinated development of man and earth,it is urgent to establish a sustainable development model.First of all, this study based on the previous interpretations of the classic man-earth relationship and combining the characteristics of man-earth development of small towns in southern Jiangsu. This research builds a man-earth system with characteristics of small towns in southern Jiangsu, and clarifies the characteristic structure of each subsystem and its internal components to discuss the coupling relationship between elements and subsystems.Secondly,on the basis of this system,an evaluation index system for the human-earth relationship of small towns in southern Jiangsu is established, combined with the availability of data, select the county-level cities of Suzhou(Zhangjiagang,Changshu,Taicang,Kunshan)、Wuxi’s county-level city Jiangyin and Changzhou’s Liyang, these 51 small towns as the research objects, and using the coupling coordination model to calculated. On the basis of the calculation results, the ArcGIS spatial analysis tools are used to analyze the spatial differentiation characteristics of small towns in southern Jiangsu.Depending on the degree of coordination,51 small towns are divided into three categories, the optimized development category, stable development category and declining development category, and studying the existing problems and difficulties. With the help of the spatial planning theory, combining the development characteristics of the three types of small towns at the same time, the development disadvantages of the three types are summarized and corresponding optimization goals and strategies are put forward:(1)The optimized development category’s goal is letting the“man” system’s stable development to achieve high-level progress in coordination between man and earth. The main strategy is to develop the population intelligently while establishing a spatial pattern of urban-rural integration.(2)The main optimization goal of the stable development category is to increase the carrying capacity of the "earth" system to achieve a stable state of coordination between man and earth. The main strategy is to expand the ecological space based on the restoration and protection of the original ecological space.(3)The most important optimization direction for declining development category is to change the way of interaction to realize the coordination between man and earth from bad to good. The main strategy is to tap the full potential of existing resources and build space intensively. Finally, each type selects a representative small town as an empirical case for research, and specific strategies for different types are given.
