Prospective Conservation Of Suzhou’s Additional Industrial Heritage From The Perspective Of Urban Memory

Since ancient times,Suzhou has been a very developed city in terms of industry and commerce.After the reform and opening up,Suzhou’s industrial status has risen rapidly through industrial restructuring,from the Southern Suzhou model to the export-oriented economic model,and has now become a world industrial powerhouse.Industry has become another representative business card of Suzhou besides the gardens,and has been integrated into every aspect of the city’s life.The city’s rich industrial culture has made us pay more attention to the preservation and inheritance of industrial culture.However,in the process of rapid urbanization,Suzhou has not paid enough attention to the industrial relics that carry deep urban memories and witness the process of Suzhou’s industrial development,resulting in the loss of a large amount of industrial heritage.In the face of the past regrets,it is necessary to learn from experience and establish a sense of planning for the future conservation of industrial heritage in the present to avoid repeating the same mistakes.Based on the current situation of industrial heritage protection in Suzhou,this paper summarizes the problems of insufficient protection scope in the existing industrial heritage in Suzhou from the perspective of urban memory and through the combing and research of the industrial development of Suzhou.This paper proposes the concept of additional industrial heritage and attempts to reconstruct the existing industrial heritage protection system in Suzhou and establish the overall protection framework of "industrial heritage +additional industrial heritage".Through the combination of urban memory elements and value factors,we re-establish the recognition model of Suzhou’s industrial heritage characteristics from the perspective of urban memory,and adjust some of the recognition criteria to the characteristics of the additional industrial heritage,and include the enterprises that do not meet the recognition criteria of industrial heritage at this stage due to the establishment time,but have special value in Suzhou in the Additional Industrial Heritage List.Finally,from the three operational stages of urban memory storage,organization and reproduction,we propose a forward-looking conservation framework and strategy for both tangible and intangible elements of the additional industrial heritage,so as to enrich Suzhou’s existing industrial heritage conservation system and retain more of Suzhou’s urban industrial memory.
