This project focuses on the comparative research of two small towns from both historical and modern views. The paper is relevant due to changes in the small towns, existing from the 11 th century. The whole research is based on two steps of comparisons: comparison between the historical spacial form of small town and the one nowadays and comparison between two small towns.I am also trying to understand in my work whether traditional towns have lost their original structural order and success of growth and what should be done not to face the dilemma of disappearance. The paper aims to reveal the town-planning features of two small towns, their development, and differences. For the first time, the stages of its urban development are identified empirically on the basis of the complex analysis results on the historical and architectural heritage of two small towns. The research results can be used for the formation of the concept concerning the solutions for the problem of population loss in small towns. The research is divided into five parts:Chapter 1 describes the historical background, theoretical basis, and value of small towns nowadays, analyzing the concept of which and defining the research object and research methods.Chapter 2 gives a brief introduction of two towns both in historical and nowadays context. The view of the towns is represented in schemes based on old maps to show the development of towns. The chapter concentrates on the formation of two small towns, materials, which were used during the time, building methods, and heritage preserved till nowadays.Chapter 3 summarizes the data obtained from the field survey, records on sociocultural, architectural, and planning factors of the town in the 21 century in the perception of small towns’ residents. It defines the problems that residents face every day in the small town.As well, the research concentrates on such aspects as over-viewing the towns by their boundary, density, houses, and main streets.Chapter 4 summarizes the information from chapters 2 and 3 and gives a comparison review on two towns.Chapter 5 summarizes and evaluates our research in different factors and includes the direction for further research. The text of the paper counting 50 000 words includes more than 500 diagrams and photos.
