| Thanks to the supportive government policies and new technologies(5G,Internet,sensors and RFID),the Internet of things(IoT)home appliance industry is enjoying fast growth. As people’s living standards continue to rise, gradually, consumer demand is shifting from material needs to emotional ones, and IoT home products that can improve people’s sense of happiness are becoming a hit in the market. At present, companies are designing IoT home products by combining IoT technology with various home products to achieve functional innovation through intelligence and automation, while paying less attention to how does intelligent technology promote happiness of users. In recent years, the study of positive experience design has become a hot topic in academic research, stemming from positive psychology, which is the study of the conditions and processes that contribute to the optimal functioning of individuals, groups and institutions, and human prosperity.Positive experience design aims to enhance people’s subjective well-being and can be achieved through two dimensions: pleasure and meaningful design. In this paper, the theory of positive experience design is applied to the design of IoT home products to help designers design IoT home products that enhance the subjective well-being of users. The research methodology and process of this paper include the following:Firstly, literature research: the concept, attributes, scope and academic research trends of IoT are defined and analysed;the characteristics of IoT home products, users, related design and literature research are extracted and summarised;the background, concept, framework, elements and cases of positive design are sorted out and summarised.Secondly, pathway construction: Based on the previous literature research,a two-week study on the user experience of IoT home products,a pathway of positive experience design for IoT home products is constructed and design tools for the pathway are proposed.Thirdly, design practice section: A number of designers used the research path to complete the design practice and produce two product design prototypes. Finally, the design evaluation section: the objective and subjective evaluation of the path and the product prototypes are completed, and the design strategy is proposed based on the analysis of the results, and the path is optimised. This study proposes a positive experience design path for IoT home products, including four design directions: individual pleasure experience, individual goal fulfilment, collective need satisfaction and collective relationship harmony.Fifteen design strategies are proposed for the paths studied. The strategies for individual pleasure experience include: enhancing interaction and communication,multi-dimensional sensory experience, anticipating usage intentions, sensing behavioural changes and monitoring data security.Strategies for personal goal achievement include: Visible goal progress, stimulation of interest in goals, and ease of managing goals.Strategies for collective needs satisfaction: modular combination models, autonomous setting of connections, elimination of value conflicts.Strategies for collective relationship harmony: gaining collective honour, creating shared memories, enhancing information sharing, and caring for others. At the theoretical level, the research enriches the design methodology of IoT home products, broadens the scope of research in this field and provides a theoretical basis for the design of IoT home products. At the practical level, the approach helps designers to develop IoT home products accurately and efficiently. Two examples of IoT home design are presented in this paper: the design of a smart coffee machine and the design of a smart chair.Concerning the prospective development of IoT home product design, this research path will help designers to design IoT home products to promote feelings of sustainable user enjoyment, future goal attainment,as well as the happiness in family social relationships. |
