Along with the transformation of the economic system, and the urban development is changing day by day,but social classes are becoming divided.Community housing,as an integral part of urban space,is reflected in the differentiation of living space. We often see the phenomenon of gated communities and urban villages standing next to each other. In China’s first-tier cities, urban villages, where young university students, migrant workers, migrant agricultural workers, landless farmers and other low-income people gather, are in stark contrast to gated communities with high property prices. In the outskirts of cities, the land for the construction of gated communities mainly comes from rural collective land, and the phenomenon of gated communities living next to urban villages(or villages)is more obvious. In the context of urbanisation, this agglomeration of poverty is likely to lead to problems of social security and further polarisation between rich and poor,so urban residential segregation deserves further study. This paper reviews the domestic and international research on residential segregation in the last decade through existing literature review and relevant theoretical studies, defines the meaning of the concepts of residential segregation,socio-spatial integration and gated communities, and proposes four dimensions of Ruiz-tagle’s socio-spatial integration theory.Using this theory,we conduct a specific analysis of the residential segregation phenomenon between gated communities and surrounding villages in Guangzhou today, and find that existing studies lack research on the influencing factors of residential segregation at the crosscommunity level.Secondly, using Jinyu Blue Bay,Guangzhou Phoenix City,Poly Flower City and neighbouring villages as research case sites, the four dimensions of socio-spatial integration theory were combined with field research and observation results to design a residential segregation scale for gated communities and neighbouring villages, and a questionnaire was distributed. The questionnaire data were collated and analysed using excel and spss data analysis software to study the segregation characteristics and influencing factors of different residential community types in each dimension, and to understand their perceptions and thoughts on residential segregation. The mechanism of the influence of residential segregation between gated communities and surrounding villages was analysed, and binary logistic regression analysis was used to examine each measure in the four dimensions to explore the degree of influence on residential segregation. Finally, the main reasons for the occurrence of residential segregation are summarised, and the four dimensions are used to propose relevant optimisation strategies and development guidelines for the better realisation of residential integration.
