Dis-embedding And Re-embedding Of The Body: A Study Of Body Sociology In The Treatment Of Female Infertility

By 2019,the total number of infertility patients in China had reached about50 million,with one in every eight couples suffering from reproductive disorders.Birth is such a complex issue.On the one hand,it concerns the future of a country and society;on the other hand,it concerns the privacy of individuals and families.For women with infertility,the effects of infertility go far beyond being a disease.But at present,infertile women about the disease narrative and explanation is still in aphasia and half aphasia state.In recent years,body sociology has become a new branch of sociological theory.The body has both natural and social attributes,which is not only a living experience but also constructed by discourse and power.Therefore,this study conducted interviews with female infertility patients through the semi-structured interview method,and explored the process of body disembedding and reembedding in the treatment of infertile women from the perspective of body sociology.First,the study focused on the disintegration of the body during the diagnosis of infertility.First of all,the diagnosis of infertility means that the physical body and health(reproductive function of the body)are disconnected.The "inactive belly" breaks their imagination of fertility.Secondly,it also means that the gender body and the motherhood role are disentombed.When the patient role comes along,the practice of "motherhood" becomes a process beyond our power.In terms of social significance,the social relations originally deeply embedded in daily life are also separated from the social body because of the diagnosis of infertility.The diagnosis of infertility breaks the balance of body and life state,and makes them enter the kingdom of disease,and the social relations also change accordingly.Second,the study focused on the body reembedding process during the stage of infertility treatment.Based on Bourdieu’s theory of capital,this part analyzes the reembedding process of infertile women reshaping their reproductive function.First of all,the cultural capital of embedded track that they present a diversified treatment,social capital embedded display them for the mobilization of social relation network and integration process,the economic capital of embedded tries to describe the effects of economic factors on treatment process,the body experiences the embedded aimed to illustrate in social body,fertility treatment process is etched by physiologic body,brings the feeling of the different body,thus presents a special form of life.Finally,the study attempted to portray the outcomes of infertile women:successful pregnancy and delivery and the reality of pregnancy preparation failure.Both of them need to face the adjustment of social relations and harvest new life experience.
