| This translation report is based on the translation practice of the first three chapters of The Art of Statistics-How to Learn from Data.The selected chapters mainly describe how to obtain information in proportion,and how to summarize and communicate numbers.The author uses common phenomena in life to tell us statistical knowledge.The original text is a social science text with strict wording.However,it tells statistics knowledge by examples from life.There are many long and complicated sentences,and attributive clauses can be found everywhere,which brings significant challenges to the translator.Therefore,this report mainly studies the translation strategies of attributive clauses.This translation practice is written under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory.Nida summarizes his years of translation practice and believes that translation needs to achieve the purpose of communication.Therefore,the translation should be natural and smooth,and it should be easy for readers to understand.However,form sometimes also contains meaning,so the formal correspondence cannot be easily given up.This report analyzes the structural differences between English and Chinese.English stresses hypotaxis while Chinese features parataxis.Therefore,in the process of the English-Chinese translation,we need to adjust sentence structures.Based on these theories,this report analyzes some attributive clauses encountered in the translation as examples to summarize the translation methods of attributive clauses.It concludes that an attributive clause can be solved in English-Chinese translation in the following ways:(1)be a prepositive modifier of a sentence;(2)be a post-positive coordinate clause or independent clause;(3)be an adverbial clause;(4)be synthesized with its main clause into a whole sentence. |
