A Report On The Chinese Translation Of Travels Of A Pioneer Of Commerce In Pigitail And Petticoats(Chapters 12&13)

This translation report is written according to the process of translating chapters 12 and 13 of Travels of a Pioneer of Commerce in Pigitail and Petticoats written by Thomas Thornville Cooper.Thomas Thornville Cooper was born in England and later accepted primary education.In 1868,Cooper tried his best to pass through Tibet from mainland China so as to come to India,but finally being caught and deported by the authorities.This experience is the content of this book.Translating the chapters 12 and 13 of this book is the translator's translation task.The two parts tell about the experience of the author in Tze-Fans and Weisee,including his own sorrows and happiness,ups and downs as well as Chinese local geographical features,traditional customs,religion and policy,etc..The chapter 12 is mainly about Cooper's experience of coming to Tali by passing Sz-se-to Village,Tung-lan,etc..The chapter 13 tells about his being in chains at Weisee and gaining freedom in the end.This book is a travel writing in prose.And the language of the whole article is simple and unadorned but lively and interesting.Different customs,complex geographical circumstance,agitation and wars are all described in detail by the author.The complexity of this text's contents makes it difficult to translate under the guidance of a simple translation theory.Fortunately,eco-translatology is such a perfect theory which is based on holism and takes all aspects into consideration.So the translator chose eco-translation theory as the theoretical guidance,and analysis some translation cases from the perspective of linguistic-dimensional transformation,culture-dimensional transformation and Communicative-dimensional transformation.In the process of translating Travels of a Pioneer of Commerce in Pigitail and Petticoats,new information about people's life,society condition,etc.in the last decades of Imperial China is showed clearly and provides us more material for us to study Chinese condition in the late decades of Imperial China.
