| This article is a report on the translation of a geological reference book.Geology books can build a bridge of academic exchange between Chinese geologists and foreign counterparts,so it is of significance to translate them.I was entrusted by the China Geological Survey to translate Tectonics of Indonesian Region to familiarize its researchers with the tectonics of Indonesian region,so it will be beneficial for them to conduct survey and research in Indonesia.The book is an informative text.When translating it,the translator need to put the reader’s understanding and feeling in the first place,paying attention to the effect of information transmission.Therefore,I chose to complete the practice under the guidance of the theory of“Function plus Loyalty”to ensure the information transmission function and communication purpose of this book and to be loyal to the original author,the client and the target readers.This report is divided into four parts: The first part is the translation task description which briefly introduces the background and description of the task,the contents and characteristics of the text,and the research significance.The second part is the description of the translating process including pre-translation preparation,translation and post-translation proofreading.The third part is the translation case analysis which first introduces the guiding theory of the translation,namely the“Function plus Loyalty” theory.I will use many examples from the vocabulary,syntax and discourse to discuss how the theory can guide my transaction.The fourth part is the practice conclusion which summarizes the inspiration and shortcoming during the practice.When writing the report,I deeply understood the important guiding role of translation theories in translation.Nord’s Function plus Loyalty can well guide the translation of informative texts.“Function” refers to all the factors that make a translation work operate in a predetermined way in the target language environment.“Loyalty” means that the translator should be morally responsible for the target reader and the original author.According to the expected function of the translation,I,attaching more importance to the interests of the target reader and the original author,adopts the“Instrumental Translation”strategy and various translation techniques to translate the original text flexibly in content and form,meanwhile I am responsible for my actions and the work.I hope this article can provide some reference for the later translators. |
