A Report On The Translation Of Tectonics Of Indonesian Region

With the view to facilitating Chinese geological researchers to read foreign geological literature,strengthening academic exchanges,and promoting the development of domestic geology,China has introduced a large number of excellent geological books from overseas for half a century.However,the literatures about Indonesian geology are still scarce,which has given risen to high demand for Chinese translation of geological books on Indonesian region.During the period from September to November 2017,the author was commissioned by the project leader of China Geological Survey to jointly translate the geological book Tectonics of Indonesian Region with three other translators.The author mainly undertakes the Chinese translation of the sixth,seventh,eighth and ninth chapters of the book.These chapters describe the geological formations of Borneo,Banda and New Guinea.The purpose of Chinese translation is to enable geological researchers to understand the plate structure,geological conditions and energy conditions of Indonesia,and to facilitate future exploration of the area.Geological text’s translation is to realize the transmission and exchange of information.Therefore,the author is expected to accurately convey the original information,ensuring that the translation achieves the communicative function of the text.The author chooses Peter Newmark’s communicative translation and semantic translation theory as the guiding theoretical method of this translation practice,selects specific cases,appropriate translation strategies and techniques to address difficulties encountered in translation from three aspects of vocabulary,sentence and discourse.This report mainly includes four parts: the first part makes a general description of the translation task,clarifying the task background,the characteristics of geological English text,task requirements and research significance;the second part describes the process of translation,including pre-translation preparation,translation process and post-translation proofreading;the third part is about concrete case analysis,showing how the author adopted corresponding translation strategy and methods according to Newmark’s translation theory;the fourth part sums up the experience and problems of the translation practice.By virtue of this translation practice,the author has improved translation skills and knowledge reserve,and has further proved that communicative translation and semantic translation theory can effectively guide the translation on geological texts,which makes translated texts more concise and readable.
