Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is a translation practice report based on the subtitle translation of Crooked Earth,a film first translated by the author, and guided by functional equivalence theory of Eugene A.Nida.Excellent subtitle translation can make cross-cultural viewers enjoy almost equivalent experience with the original audience, and promote cultural transmission and communication. However, film subtitles translation has its difficulties which need further research, such as: cultural variation is difficult to translate;subtitles need to match the speaking speed of the characters in the scene,so the number of words and time are constrained;the dialogues are partially colloquial;the meaning and style must be strictly adapt to the context and etc. This translation practice report is divided into four chapters: Chapter 1 is the description of translation tasks, which introduces the background of the tasks, the characteristics of the texts and the significance of the study.Chapter 2,Description of the Translating Process, includes preparations, translation process and post-translation proofreading modification.Chapter 3 is a case study of translation, including four aspects: 1.Lexical equivalence: exploring the appropriate use of idioms and Chinese four-character words to translate;2.Syntactic equivalence: in view of the differences in language expression between Chinese and English, the author uses such skills as linear translation, inverse translation, combination, words conversion and inversion of voice to study;3.Contextual semantic equivalence: analyzing context translation equivalence from linguistic context and cultural context;4.Stylistic equivalence: from the perspective of colloquial language, taking vulgar language and slang as examples to analyze stylistic equivalence.Chapter 4 is a summary of this translation practice. The author reviews the process of translation and analysis, summarizes the experience and shortcomings.Through this report, the author studied the feasibility of the functional equivalence theory in the film subtitle translation, and analyzed the translation strategies and techniques applicable to different difficulties in this type of text,in order to improve the translation ability and provide some reference for film subtitle translators.
