Abstract/Summary:
Researchers have looked at virtual reality art and narrative art,but there is a gap in the research concerning abstract new media art and the reaction of the audience. The purpose of this research is to document and give insight using my own artwork as a case study and using a psychological based survey to record user emotional reaction to my own body of work.My methods for this research included using the University of Florida’s manikin survey to log user emotional reaction to my own body of work.I recorded this data using an online based survey that was integrated to WeChat which is very popular and widely used in Chinese mainland. As well,as I placed several of my series online accompanied by an online survey that was to be completed after viewing the artwork on a website platform. Then I analyzed the data from both collections and made some conclusions. As well as reading of various articles that have mostly subjectively recorded how viewers react to multimedia artwork specifically ones dealing with technology or time based media. My empirical results for my research are that there is a relationship between viewer’s perceived emotions and the emotion based artwork.I found that user’s emotion correlated with the original emotion used when creating the artwork. When the viewer saw a piece that started with sad emotions the viewer would record the manakin face associated with the negative emotion valence. If a piece was happier the viewer recorded the face that was on the positive end of the valence.I found similar results for the art viewed in web form.Further,I subjectively analyzed the reactions to the AR filter inspired by the same series used in the empirical study.I found a relationship between the user’s reactions to the filter when compared to the original emotion used to create the variation of the artwork. In this series, the corresponding emotions were joy and playfulness. In conclusion,by using technology it helped the viewer accurately associate negative or positive emotions with the artwork that without it would have not been the case.I found that the artwork where the viewer was more immersed in the technology as more effective than simply viewing the artwork in traditional format;both empirically via the live exhibition and subjectively with the AR phone filter. So the more integration of technology helped the viewer more effectively process the original emotion used to create the artwork.Further, the viewer either directly identified the correct emotion through the manikin survey or exhibited subjective emotions similar to that of the artist’s intended emotion.
