A Study Of Rural Economy In Longzhong Region During The Period Of The Republic Of China

Longzhong region is located in the edge of the Loess Plateau,adjacent to the Qinghai Tibet Plateau and Mongolia Plateau.It is the transition region from agricultural region to animal husbandry region.During the period of the Republic of China,the economic structure of Longzhong region was dominated by agriculture,supplemented by animal husbandry and handicraft industry.The development of its rural economy was in a low level until the founding of the People’s Republic of China.The reason is that the warlords in this region are independent and lack a stable and efficient government.In other words,such a government is often absent or weak in the process of promoting rural economic development.Based on the above reasons,this paper attempts to explore the overall situation and development trend of rural economy in Longzhong region during the period of the Republic of China from the aspects of agriculture,animal husbandry,handicraft industry,rural lending,rural market and farmers’ living conditions,and try to analyze the characteristics of the regional rural economy in this period.Before the national government entered Longzhong region,it was always in a state of chaos.Warlords,local governments,bandits and other forces played games with each other.Coupled with frequent natural disasters,farmers’ lives could be said to be disastrous;After the national government took over the region,especially from 1935 to1945,the rural economy developed rapidly,the living conditions of farmers improved,and the factors of modernization gradually penetrated into the grass-roots level,which had a positive impact on the people’s lives.In general,although new changes have taken place in the relationship between people and land,handicraft industry,rural lending and other aspects,the performance of rural economic development is not very significant,the development of rural market lags behind for a long time,and the life of farmers is still poor due to the influence of many factors such as the Anti Japanese War,poor implementation,lack of funds,and short time.Compared with other regions,the rural economic development of Longzhong region in the period of the Republic of China has two characteristics: stage and particularity.It can be said that this poverty situation hasnot been fundamentally reversed,which brings us the Enlightenment: the development of rural economy in a region requires the strong support of the local government,as well as the development of local advantageous industries in accordance with local conditions,which is also the inevitable way to achieve rural revitalization.The advantage of Longzhong region is that agriculture and animal husbandry can complement each other and develop together.History has proved that it is not advisable to pay too much attention to the development of agriculture while neglecting the development of animal husbandry in this region.
