Abstract/Summary:
The source text of this translation report is from the second chapter of The Philosophy of Chinese Military Culture-Shih vs.Li,which was co-written by William H.Mott IV and Jae Chang Kim,and published in 2006.It traces the development of the Chinese military culture from the ancient works on the art of wars to recent works on Chinese military thinking.By translating the source text into Chinese, the translator intends to introduce to the Chinese readers the scholars’ contribution to the Chinese military culture study and help them to know more about the Chinese military culture. The book is an English text about the relationship between the Chinese military philosophy and the Chinese military culture, and it is a typical cross-cultural text.Susan Bassnett’s Culture Translation Theory focuses on cultural equivalence between the source language and the target language. Therefore, the translator chose the Culture Translation Theory as a guide. In line with the translation strategy of domestication as the main and foreignization as the supplementary, such translation methods as conversion, amplification, free translation and division are used to solve problems in translating the military words, the Chinese military quotations, the long and complex sentences,as well as textual cohesion. The translator also hopes to provide some valuable suggestions for the translators those engaged in the Chinese military culture.
