| With the continuous development of modern society,movies are gradually becoming a new way to spread culture and values through presenting characters and themes that carry elements of national culture.Marvel films,also called Marvel Cinematic Universe,is the general name of a series superhero movies created by Marvel Studios.In 2019,the release of American movie Avengers 4:Endgame is another communication between China and America in culture.The essence of cultural communication is the exchange of values within cultures.Learning different cultural values can not only deepen the understanding of different national cultures,but also can make people treat their national cultural values objectively to be more tolerant to cultural differences.Based on Hofstede’s cultural dimension theory,this thesis conducts a textual analysis of the specific plots of Marvel films and a brief description of Chinese movies with the same themes,aiming to find out the value orientations reflected in Marvel films in different cultural dimensions and compare these value orientations belonging to the United States with the Chinese value orientations reflected in Chinese films to explore the differences between Chinese and American value orientations.This paper addresses the following three questions:(1)What are the characteristics of Chinese and American values?(2)What are the differences between Chinese and American value orientations?(3)What are the implications of the different value orientations of China and America for their cultural development?This thesis draws a conclusion through the analysis of Marvel films:Based on different cultural backgrounds,China and America have different values and value orientations.Influenced by historical,geographical and religious factors,China and America do not share the same values.The different value orientations of China and America influence the formation of their national values and the process of social development.In Marvel films,the cultural elements and values of different countries are intermingled.This shows that Marvel films not only contain the unique American values,but also reflects the different cultures and values of various countries in the details of the series of movies.This research analyzes popular movies with cultural theories.Through the analysis of different values between China and America,this research not only helps the audience have a deeper understanding of different cultures and values,but also helps audience to objectively treat the cultural differences between China and America.This paper analyzes the differences of value orientations embodied in Chinese films and Marvel films with the similarities of these two theories,and this thesis also provides a new perspective for the study of cross-cultural theories. |
