The Visibility Consciousness Of Business Interpreters

From the traditional view,the interpreter is seen as a "voice tube" and should be invisible in the interpreting.However,with the increase of interpreting activities,more and more interpreting researchers have found that the interpreters’visibility consciousness can better promote communication through some strategies.At present,the research on interpreter’s visibility consciousness mainly focuses on court interpreting and medical interpreting.However,the application of the interpreter’s visibility consciousness in business interpreting,as a kind of liaison interpreting,also deserves attention.The report is based on the interpreter’s visibility consciousness theory proposed by Chinese scholar Ren Wen and combined with the author’s practical experience as a business negotiation interpreter.It demonstrates that the interpreter’s active participation can better promote business negotiations under the guidance of the interpreter’s visibility consciousness theory.Besides the introduction and conclusion,the report is composed of four parts,including task description,interpreting process,business interpreting and the interpreters’ visibility consciousness theory,and analysis of interpreting strategies.This report analyzes the interpreting strategies used in the interpreting,such as adjustment,omission,inquiry,adding the interpreter’s own words,creating a turn,and interrupting a turn.It illustrates that interpreters can make themselves visible in business interpreting by acting as a gatekeeper,a co-interlocutor,and a coordinator.Through the analysis based on the interpreters’ visibility conciousness theory,the author hopes to provide reference for later interpreters to exert their visibility consciousness in business interpretation,so as to better complete the task of interpretation.
