With its fast economic development and its increasingly high international status, today’s China has been more closely linked with the world. To know better of the world,at the same time,to publicize and present China to the world, and to let the international community“understand China”have become the important strategies of our nation’s development. The political publicity text,as a special genre, represents the voice of a country. It covers a wide range of aspects, including politics, economy, culture and social life. Its language and style are unique, and quite a number of terms carry Chinese characteristics.More importantly, the quality of the translation of political text greatly affects the image of the country and the nation. But the differences do exist between Chinese and western languages in cultures and people’s way of thinking, which makes the translation of political text difficult in translation. The translation of political publicity texts requires strict transmission of the source language in terms of both language form and cultural connotation so as to accurately convey China’s voice to the world,to show China’s image,to strive for China’s right to speak on the international stage, and to shake off the Western discourse’s hegemony.Meanwhile, the impacts that the translated text has upon the target readers as well as the functions of the original text, have been emphasized, and the gist of the discourse is given enough attention. In the course of translation, the translator is required to choose certain translation methods in conformity to the linguistic, cultural and pragmatic rules of a target language for the purpose of conveying the information of a source text.Newmark puts forward communicative concept and semantic concept, which are quality of his translation theory.Communicative translation theory requires the translators to give priority to the readers’reading experience, the readability of the version and the communicative effect from the perspective of the target language readers.Under the perspective of this theory, the translation should be as close to the effect of the original on the source readers as possible. On the contrary, semantic translation theory emphasizes the original form and contents and maintains the characteristics of the original text to the greatest extent possible. The report of the 19th National Congress is a typical political publicity text.Based on Newmark’s translation theory, this thesis makes a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the translation of 137 words with Chinese characteristics in the report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and applies the translation methods, including literal translation, free translation,word-for-word translation, conversion and amplification, and then probes into the effects of the version have on the target readers. Also, under the framework of Newmark’s translation theory, the paper explains how the balance is achieved between preserving the function of the original text and the language style of the original text in the English translation of words with Chinese characteristics in the report of the 19thNCPPC.Through the analysis,it is found that the English translation of words with Chinese characteristic in the report of the 19thNCPPC is simplified as much as possible in style, and comes directly to the point, achieving authenticity, fluency and conciseness. At the same time, through flexible uses of different translation methods, translators should not only follow the principle of accuracy of political publicity text translation, retain the characteristics of Chinese culture, but also fully attach prominence to the receptivity of the target readers so as to basically ensure the same effect the target language has upon its readers as that of the source text. |
