Research On The Argot In The National Dictionary Of Insinuation In The Period Of The Republic Of China

The national Dictionary of incisions is the first argot dictionary in China.It was published by Shanghai East Road Company in January 1924.The contents of this dictionary are based on argot collection such as ‘Jiang hu Qie yao’.This argot dictionary has eighteen categories and three hundred seventy-six subcategories,containing 9125 entries.Such a huge scale becomes a collection source of later argot dictionaries.Some of the argot entries are derived from the general language,and on the basis of the general language,the semantic loan is carried out.This thesis makes a meticulous analysis,involving the morphology,the cognitive linguistics and the evidence of the headword of the enigmatic language.As a matter of fact,this insinuating language is intimately related to the social structure,the ethnic culture and the common national language.For this purpose,we naturally should not look down upon the existence of the enigmatic language,but also gather linguistic data of the insinuating language both from the ancient and modern,and establish the systematic research in the light of the epoch,the territory,and the settings of the culture.The first part is to study the survey of the argot dictionary,specifically exploring its origin,characteristics,printed version and classificational logic.Although the insinuating language exists in the peculiar colony,providing services for the peculiar populations,its form of the presentation is dominant and its form of the semantic course is recessive.No matter how much ingredient there are,the significance of the insinuation language is not a briefness addition of the meaning of the composition.In other words,it can not be comprehended by adding significance of every constituent of the headword of the insinuating language.So the sense of the cant is firm and the construction of the argot is compactness.The second part is to research the construction of the enigmatic language.The word-coinage of this insinuating language includes Phonetics,Philology,Rhetoric and Semantics.However there is no word-formation named arbitrary combination of sound and meaning.There are motivation for production of enigmatic language.This paper refers to the research of the static and the dynamic analysis.The static analysis of the research of this paper involves the settlement of the conception of the word-formation,the word-creation,and the motivation.Combing the relationship between the synchronic description and the diachronic description,the research needs to explore the evolution of every headword of the enigmatic language,understanding the relationship between the lemma of the dictionaries of this insinuating language,and the development of the evolution of the Chinese vocabulary.The third part is to consider the word formation of the argot entries in the dictionary.It approximately incorporates the voice,the characters,the figure of speech and the semantic section.Compared with the common language,there is no arbitrary combination of the sound and the meaning in the coinage of argot.There are motivational reasons for each argot entry.On the basis of motivation,different appellations of the same argot entry reflect the arbitrariness on the basis of motivation.The fourth part is to discuss the insinuating language from the perspective of cognitive linguistics.Through the analysis of the construction of enigmatic language,this thesis explores the thinking and inference mode of the creation of argot,so as to summarize the inherent ‘image-schema’ or ‘metaphor mechanism’ in it.We discover that what cant intends to conceal is the privacy of the population,and what the secret supposes to conceal is generally the ending influenced by the mainstream popularity within the group.The reason why insinuating language exists as a form of ‘peculiar custom’ is that the other language customs of folk cultural,such as conundrums,proverbs,fixed expressions,taboo words,etc,are not like the enigmatic language which has powerfully closeness,and is not a exceptional character system used within a peculiar group.Since 1993,the compilation of insinuating language dictionaries,such as the Great Dictionary of Chinese argot,lists the corresponding relevance between ‘common language’ and ‘insinuating language’,but there is no discussion on the motivation of it.The motivation filiation between them is significant to comprehend the construction of the cant.Through the motivation analysis,we find that: some argots are created on the basis of regional dialects,which are still used in regional dialects,and some have become members of the common language.The path of its development and evolution is from the regional dialect to the regional dialect or to the common language.The fifth part is the study on the use of the insinuating language,seeking which cant is still applied until now.The research of the argot roughly belongs to the study of the sociolinguistics,propagating from the traditional culture of our country,reflexing the mode of life.The linguistic data of this enigmatic language dictionary contains luxuriant epitome of the epoch characteristics and the socio-culture.Some of them are originated by regional dialect and others have broken through fence developing into common language.Some of them are deprived from the private component,using in the professional jargon,realizing the trait of the argot in the same era.The conclusion summarizes the primary standpoint of this thesis,the machine made of establishing enigmatic
