In the latter half of the 19 th century,Korea was involved in the whirlpool of capitalist power dividing up the world.Japan began to implement the theory of Aggressing Korea to seize Korea as a bridge to enter Asia.Russia expanded its territory in East Asia and clamored for the policy of expanding its territory far away.During this period, the relationship between Japan and Korea became an important part of the situation in Northeast Asia. While Japan began to expand its power to Korea,Russia also carried out a series of political, military and diplomatic struggles for its own interests in Korea. As an important factor affecting the relations between Korea and Japan,Russia’s policy towards Korea has experienced three stages : Prudence, monopolization and withdrawal. Before the Sino Japanese War of 1894-1895,Russia’s influence in Korea was much less than that of China, which had maintained suzerain vassal relations with Korea for many centuries.Compared with Japan’s advantages in Korea,Russia was obviously a "latecomer".The most significant factor affecting Korea Japan relations was China, and the Russian factor in Korea Japan relations was weak.In the 1880 s,Russia began to amend its conservative policy toward Korea into a strategic offensive strategy. However, due to its lack of national strength,Russia could only concern itself with the mutual checks and balances and containment with Japan. With the intensification of the Korean Japanese conflict,Russia slightly changed its cautious policy in Korea, replacing it with an exclusive policy of expelling Japan and controlling Korea. After the Sino Japanese War of1894-1895,due to the Qing government’s withdrawal from the Korean Peninsula,Japan was trying to dominate Korea alone. However, due to Russia’s serious containment.Russia fully intervened in the Korean Peninsula Struggle marked by "Triple Intervention".After that,Japan and Russia attacked and defended each other in the Korean Peninsula struggle, forming a situation of Japan and Russia jointly managing Korea. With the rapid rise of Japan and the formation of the British Japanese alliance, the contradiction between Japan and Russia was irreconcilable, which eventually led to the outbreak of the Japanese Russian war.Japan completely controlled Korea through the Russo Japanese war.According to the provisions of the Portsmouth Treaty,Russia withdrew from the Korean Peninsula, recognized Japan’s rule over Korea, and Russia’s policy towards Korea ended. After Russia’s defeat in the Russo-Japanese War and its withdrawal from the Korean Peninsula,Russia lost control of Korea and Japan forced the Korean government to sign an annexation treaty. It also marked the colonization of Korea by Japanese imperialism, and the relationship between Japan and Korea entered the new stage. |
