Arikha is one of the most influential western modernist painters in the 20 th century. He is also an outstanding art historian and critic.Arikha’s artistic creation has experienced several stages, and each stage has its distinctive characteristics: the earliest period is the period of illustration and sketch;the period of ambiguity between concrete and abstract;the period of pure abstractionism;the period of concrete expressionism.Arikha’s paintings changed from abstract to realistic. His concept of "depiction" of painting, the unique composition of his works, his persistence in using solid colors, cutting the objects of the picture, and the prominent relationship between black and white in the picture make the picture present a strong impact. The first chapter is the formation of Arikha’s painting style.Starting from Arikha’s early life, combined with his life experience and education experience, this paper analyzes the change of his painting style, explores the reasons for its formation, and deeply analyzes the transformation of his painting means of expression. The second chapter is about the formal structure of Arikha’s figurative painting. This paper focuses on the formal structure characteristics of Arikha’s later Figurative Expressionism paintings. It analyzes the characteristics of Arikha’s paintings from the aspects of the relationship between black and white, composition factors, color factors and the "shape" of the picture, and makes a detailed and in-depth study on its form and structure through examples. The third chapter is about the inspiration and thinking of his own artistic creation.Through the analysis of the form and structure of Arikha’s painting works, this paper applies its characteristics to self artistic creation, and analyzes the form and emotional expression in the process of creation through the form structure of painting. From the relationship between black and white gray, composition, color and the overall "shape" of the picture, the deep thinking of the form and structure of painting, and finally combined with the author’s creative practice to experience the thinking and harvest of artistic creation.
