The eight South Asian countries--Afghanistan,Bangladesh,Bhutan,India,Maldives,Nepal,Pakistan and Sri Lanka--are important“Belt and Road”countries within Asia. With the rapid development of the“Belt and Road”economic strategy, economic and trade contacts between China and the eight South Asian countries are continuously deepening. However, because of the cultural differences and the linguistic barriers between China and the eight South Asian countries, the two sides can not understand each other very well in some cases in the process of economic trade contacts. In the circumstances, therefore, interpreters function as a bridge and play an increasingly important role in transferring information and communication. The author was lucky enough to serve as a liaison interpreter in the 9thSouth Asia-Sichuan Business Promotion Round-Table Conference from September 16-20th,2018.Liaison interpreting usually requires the interpreter to complete an interpreting task in a short time with little or no ancillary tools. The interpretive theory, proposed by Seleskovitch, states that interpreting does not stress on the equivalence of the linguist unit but transfer the meaning of the speakers. With the guidance of interpretive theory, this report discusses the strategies of liaison interpretation by analyzing the practical interpreting tasks in such cases as visiting the West Expo, business negotiation, etc.during the 9thSouth Asia-Sichuan Business Promotion Round-Table Conference. This report is composed of four chapters. The first two chapters mainly focus on the conference background, the requirements and characteristics of the interpreting task. And then detail the pre-task preparation, mainly emphasize on collecting the related conference information, familiar with the guest information and interpreting theory preparation. The third chapter, the most important chapter in this report, expounds the difficulties in fulfilling the task of liaison interpreting, such as non-native speakers’accent, terminology, language redundancy and the cultural differences, and the interpreting strategies adopted to overcome these difficulties, including prediction, omission, reformulation and explanation to analyze. This report concludes that various difficulties may be encountered in the process of liaison interpretation, and interpreters need to adopt corresponding interpretation strategies according to actual situations;more importantly, interpreters should be prepared in many ways for different liaison interpretation tasks, including theoretical guidance,pre-task preparations. It is sincerely expected that this report will provide some reference for better fulfillment of liaison interpretation.
