| With the rapid development of globalization and the increasingly close cultural exchanges among countries,a growing number of domestic readers aspire to understand the news trends abroad,in which news translation plays an important role.At the same time, news commentary text provides readers with a fresh perspective and thinking. In this thesis,The Guardian’s COVID-19 series reports are taken as translation materials, and 20 news reviews related to economic and political aspects are selected to explore the translation of news commentary texts.Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory, this thesis analyzes the characteristics of the source text, including the lexical, syntactic and textual features in the source text,as well as the characteristics of news commentary texts. Then it conducts a case study from the aspects of vocabulary, sentence, title and discourse. The lexical level mainly involves the translation methods and strategies of abbreviations and proper nouns;the syntactic level mainly discusses the translation of long and difficult sentences and passive sentences;at the same time,it summarizes the translation skills of titles;at the discourse level,it mainly studies the translation of cohesion and transition between sentences and between paragraphs. In this translation practice,it is found that the translation of news commentary text should conform to the standardization and strictness of news wording, and the expression should be clear and fluent to avoid ambiguity. This thesis aims to reveal the features of news translation and explore the characteristics and translation strategies of news commentary texts via the translation of the series of COVID-19 reports in The Guardian. At the same time, the theory can be better applied to specific translation practice. The report also aims to provide enlightenment and reference for the research in the field of news commentary translation. |
