Conformity is a phenomenon in which individuals voluntarily conform to the majority of the group in terms of cognition, judgment, beliefs and behavior under group pressure. This process involves a series of mental games played by individuals under pressure.perceived stress is the degree to which an individual perceives an external event as stressful, that is,whether or not the objective stress will affect the individual, depending on the individual’s interpretation and perception of the stressful event.Self-esteem is the individual’s attitude and feeling toward his or her whole self.It is a stable and directed personality trait. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of perceived stress and self-esteem on conformity behavior. This study aims to help people to understand the reasons for their choices in a comprehensive, objective, and rational manner,to overcome negative herding, and to make more independent choices for themselves. The study consisted of three parts: Study 1 investigated and analyzed the relationship between perceived stress and self-esteem in general college students, using the Chinese version of the perceived stress scale by Tingzhong Yang to measure perceived stress and the Rosenberg self-esteem scale to measure self-esteem levels;Study 2 explored the effect of perceived stress on conformity behavior.A one-way between-subjects experimental design was used, with the independent variable being the level of perceived stress and the dependent variable being the incidence of conformity behavior. The subjects in Study 1 were screened and divided into high and low subgroups of perceived stress, and 16 subjects in each group were studied. The JSA paradigm was used to measure the conformity behavior of the subjects.Study 3 explored the effects of perceived stress and self-esteem on conformity behavior.A 2 × 2 between-subjects experimental design was used. The independent variables were the level of perceived stress(high perceived stress, low perceived stress)and the level of self-esteem(high self-esteem,low self-esteem),and the dependent variable was the incidence of conformity behavior. The high perceived stress high self-esteem group, low perceived stress high self-esteem group, high perceived stress low self-esteem group, and low perceived stress low self-esteem group were screened by the survey in Study 1.Sixteen subjects from each group were studied.Differences in the subordination of individuals with different levels of perceived stress and self-esteem were compared. This study used SPSS statistical software for data processing and analysis, and correlation analysis,t-test,and ANOVA were performed on the experimental results.Research results:1.college students’ perceived stress was significantly and negatively correlated with the level of self-esteem,r=-0.64,p<0.001.self-esteem level was significantly and negatively correlated with two latitudes in the perceived stress scale,tension,r=-0.56,p<0.001;and with loss of control,r=-0.51,p<0.001.2.The analysis of variance was conducted with conformity as the dependent variable and perceived stress level and self-esteem level as the independent variables, and the results were: the main effect of perceived stress was significant,F(1,60)=12.90,p < 0.05;the main effect of self-esteem level was significant,F(1,60)= 37.41,p < 0.001;there was a significant interaction between the effects of perceived stress and self-esteem on conformity behavior,F(1,60)= 6.031,p < 0.05.Research conclusions:1.college students’ perceived stresses were significantly and negatively correlated with their self-esteem levels.2.The level of perceived stress affects the conformity behavior of college students, and the higher the perceived stress, the more likely the conformity. The level of self-esteem of college students affects their conformity behavior, and the lower the self-esteem,the more likely they are to be conformity.3.Individuals with different perceived stresses had different effects of self-esteem on their conformity behavior.Individuals with high perceived stresses had lower conformity rates than those with low self-esteem;individuals with low perceived stresses had higher conformity rates than those with low self-esteem.
