A Report On The Simulate Interpreting From The Perspective Of Interpretive Theory

Dietary culture has always played an important role in all cultures globally.In a globalized world,dietary culture is becoming more and more influential.China is also influencing the world with its unique dietary culture.Once Upon a Bite is a documentary series that aired on Zhejiang TV in 2018.The film compares and contrasts Chinese and foreign cooking and dietary customs through location shooting.The film serves as a good way to present various dietary cultures and gives viewers access to a better understanding of the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western dietary cultures.As the narration and subtitles are in Chinese,interpreting the documentary from Chinese to English is an important way to enhance the image of China as well as culture and influence.Therefore,it is of great significance to provide the audience with a subtitle of high quality.By interpreting this documentary,the interpreter intends to help the foreign audience know the rich history of Chinese dietary culture and its profound influence on global dietary culture.The documentary uses a large number of expressions related to Chinese culture,which makes it difficult to carry out this interpretation practice.Taking Interpretive Theory as the theoretical basis,the interpreter adopts some strategies to cope with the problems encountered.Basing on the comprehension of the source language,the interpreter takes the meaning of the documentary content out of the language shell and then re-expresses it in English.This report consists of four chapters.In the first chapter,the interpreter introduces the background of this interpreting practice,analyzes the characteristics of the documentary’s subtitles,and discusses the required competencies of the interpreter.In the second chapter,the interpreting process is recorded,from practical and theoretical preparation to in-progress interpreting and post-interpreting summaries.The third chapter describes the difficulties that arise during the interpreting process and the strategies to solve them.It also analyzes strategies through case studies under the guidance of Interpretive Theory.The last chapter is the conclusion of this practice report and lists some of the problems that remain to be solved and the experiences that the interpreter has gained from this interpretation practice.This report has explored the interpretation of documentary subtitles through the analysis of the documentary Once Upon a Bite.It is hoped that this report can provide some reference for the translation and interpretation of related documentaries in the future.
