| EST is widely used in daily life. The expository text of EST is closely related to our life.Economic globalization provides people with goods from all over the world, such as the electric toothbrushes, the face washers, the automobiles and so on.Those goods cover all aspect of our life. For the user, carefully reading the user’s manual can help them better know the functions of the product, and use the goods more conveniently and safely. The user manual of the car is a safety guide. With the rapid development of the automobile industry, the demand for new energy vehicles is also increasing.Accurate and complete translation of the manual can help users solve the problems in driving. The correct driving of new energy vehicles also can effectively extend the life of the vehicle.Guided by Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the translator takes the owner’s manual of Tasla Model S as the source text to explore problems encountered in the translation process from three levels:lexical, syntactic and textual. This report consists of five parts:task description, translation process description, theory overview, case analysis and conclusion.Chapter 4 is the key of the report. In this chapter, the translator combines Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory to explore problems encountered in the translation process from three levels:lexical, syntactic and textual. At the lexical level, the translation of professional terms and pronouns is very important.Professional terms should retain their idiomatic expressions, and pronouns should be retained or omitted in different situations,so as to achieve the equivalence at lexical level. At syntactic level,it is necessary to pay attention to the expression of the passive voice, imperative sentences, and the complex and long sentence, and the translator should pay attention to the conciseness of the translation. When translating, the translator should choose different method to achieve equivalence at the syntactic level. At textual level, the translator focus on the cohesion and coherence between sentences and paragraphs to achieve the equivalence. The research shows that Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory has guiding significance to the translation of manual. The translator analyzes the source text from three aspects:vocabulary, syntax and text, and chooses different translation methods in different situations so that the quality of translation could be effectively improved. |
